The output and lives of the Bloomsbury Group usually arouse strong feelings for or against, but both its admirers and critics acknowledge that its members made a significant impact on the cultural life of England in the first half of the twentieth century. This special interest day focuses on them through the works of its artists, particularly Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Roger Fry and Dora Carrington, and puts them in the context of their complicated, but fascinating, interrelated lives.

An integral part of their lives, however, was an interest in the decorative arts, fully demonstrated in the formation of the Omega Workshops in 1913 and in the decoration of Charleston, the ‘Bloomsbury in Sussex’ home Bell and Grant shared for fifty years and which is a wonderful embodiment of their style and way of life. We will, therefore, also be looking at the enormous variety of projects they were involved in and the interiors and items they decorated with flair and exuberance.

Sandra Pollard holds a BA Hons from the University of Bristol and later studied fine art and art history, culminating in a Certificate in Higher Education in Fine Art and an MA in Art History. She has been a part-time lecturer for thirty-five years, previously for the University of Leeds and presently for the Open University and the University of Liverpool, as well as a freelance lecturer to NADFAS, the Art Fund, the National Trust, the WEA etc. She is also a founder member, past Chairman and now President of North Yorks and South Durham Decorative and Fine Arts Society and a Trustee of the Bowes Museum.
